The music mastermind” – CLASH

“Immersive, progressive and challenging, the type of sonic credo that forces boundaries to be broken.” WONDERLAND

Following his highly acclaimed debut album ‘Square Breath’, North London composer, musician and vocalist Harvey Causon returns with his new single “Flehmen Response” – dropped independently.

Connecting universal ideologies with raw, conscious documentation and eclecticism, Harvey Causon creates progressive and thoughtful moments through every aspect of his complex artistry. Already holding serious tastemaker attention across THE INDEPENDENT, NME, WONDERLAND, CRACK and BBC R1, the young talent delivered his stunning debut album ‘Square Breath’ last year, solidifying an electric trajectory while touring globally with Mercury Prize winner Sampha. Now with eyes firmly set on his headline shows in February, including Bristol’s Rough Trade (26th) and the ICA, London (27th), a full band experience for the first time since 2022 marks new levels for Causon as he continues to rise as one of the brightest stars in British music right now.

For his latest release, Harvey Causon unleashes “Flehmen Response” - a raw and introspective exploration of human connection and experience. Bursting with potent electronics, glitchy percussion and heavy-set basslines cutting through the tension, the dystopian backing lays groundwork for his tender vocal cadence shining with atmosphere and intent.

Paired with a stunning visualiser that utilises experimental FX, made completely DIY through glass, water and lasers alongside fellow creative Genevieve Reeves, Causon enters an unknown realm of communication; illustrated through shifting patterns and reflections before they collapse into a singular atom and consciousness. The energy and emotion surface pure yet distorted in the face of legacy while the existential angst deepens as he pleads, “Feeling like you would die without it // Dreams that you intervene.”

Speaking on the origin, Harvey Causon states: “Flehmen response is a physical behaviour in some animals which helps detect pheromones and scents. I found it interesting how certain animals have quite a physical way of communicating and receiving pheromones, whereas humans can’t see them but they’re a bit like a sixth sense.”

He adds: “The track became about leaning into the feeling of things rather than being too rational. To me, the track sounds like noise and particles that we can’t see in the air but carry communication through consciousness via a web of space and time (string theory). The lyrics and mood of the track carry a weighty energy of pondering what actually matters in life and whether we actually have free will over the paths we choose and the decisions we make. It asks the question of whether we as humans ‘only pass above’ or whether our consciousness and energies leave a mark or impact.”

A beacon of individual expression, Harvey Causon’s vivid storytelling transforms the powerful sonics and visual universes that surround him. “When writing, I think of music like a 4D box. I imagine people or granular atoms being swished around by the textures,” he expresses. Potent illustrations arise across his debut album ‘Square Breath’, from the societal ego-death on “Psycho” (watch), the warped realities of “Fault Lines” (watch), and the striking, destructive hyperrealism of “Nostalgia” (watch) – the rising star has collaborated with some of the most talented directors and choreographers across London including Folu Odimayo, Kat Collings, Magnus Westwell and Katie Scott.

Whilst studying in Bristol, Causon would continuously meet with university physicists, ultimately fuelling his obsession with quantum theory and the perception of reality while adding an otherworldly edge to the sound he was already developing.

Now in London and pioneering the underground with sounds showered in authority and vulnerability, his breakout track “London Stock” quickly set levels as a stream of incendiary releases followed including his acclaimed EPs Fourth Wall and Vertebrae - pivotal moments that sealed his presence as one of the most potent new names emerging in the UK.

A hunger for experimentation through live performance soon became apparent as Causon stepped back from releasing to perfect his craft. Earning a significant support slot alongside iconic UK electronic act Hot Chip, Causon then delivered sold-out shows in London and Bristol as his music transcended into official scores for a series of short films launched through DoBeDo Projects and NOWNESS.

Returning to the ether last year, Causon caught the ear of British superstar Sampha who enlisted him into his band. From Japan to Seoul to Paris, the collective toured worldwide and capped off the iconic run with incendiary performances across We Out Here Festival, Camp Flog Gnaw, and key shows in North America where Causon emerged as the lead support act.

Harvey Causon continues to carve his own lane as a true multi-hyphenate talent and storyteller. With his highly anticipated headline shows fast approaching, Causon’s creative work is starting to generate as much critical attention as his music already does.
