Daniel Belasco talks to White Cube Gallery detailing Al Held’s exhibition ‘Al Held: About Space’ at the White Cube Bermondsey.

“Daniel Belasco, Executive Director of the Al Held Foundation, explores the artist’s monumental exhibition ‘Al Held: About Space’ at White Cube Bermondsey (2024).

Bringing together masterworks from across the artist’s five-decade career, the selection reveals the extent to which Held realised novel modes of form, space and colour in painting through a combination of hard-edged geometry and spontaneous gestural expression.

‘These are optimistic paintings. [Al Held] was trying to find some kind of harmony or balance within these competing truths in the world, and so for him it was a leap of positive faith that there can be some kind of singular structure that underlines all the chaos' – Daniel Belasco”
